Aquidaban: last journey to the Pantanal

Paraguay

2023

Personal project

Linking the town of Concepciо́n to the small village of Bahía Negra, gateway to the Pantanal, one of the world's largest floodplains, the Aquidaban is a veritable floating market. It has been serving the many ‘colonias’ of the river's indigenous peoples for decades, in less than 4 days. Foodstuffs, motorbikes, household appliances, mattresses - the boat makes up for the poor quality of the roads, which are often impassable when it rains.

With the river drying up, making it difficult to navigate, and the rising cost of fuel, the Aquidaban stopped running at the end of 2023, leaving the many people living along the river isolated.
